Shampoo & Conditioner by Hair Type: A No-Nonsense Guide
Shampoo is for the scalp, conditioner is for the lengths
Pick your shampoo based on your scalp (oily, dry, sensitive, dandruff-prone) and your conditioner based on your lengths (fine, dry, damaged, curly). Mixing brands is completely fine.
Fine and oily hair
Lightweight, clarifying shampoos and thin, rinse-out conditioners applied only to the ends prevent the flat, greasy look. Avoid heavy oils and butters near the roots.
Dry, damaged and color-treated hair
Sulfate-free shampoos wash more gently and preserve color longer. Look for conditioners and weekly masks with proteins, ceramides or bond-building ingredients to reinforce damaged strands.
Curly hair basics
Curls need moisture: hydrating shampoos, generous conditioner, and a leave-in cream or oil to define the curl pattern. Many curly routines shampoo less often and rely on co-washing between wash days.
Heat protection is not optional
If you blow-dry, straighten or curl, a heat protectant spray is the single cheapest way to prevent damage — no mask repairs hair as well as not burning it in the first place.
Before you buy
Diagnose your scalp first, your lengths second, and change one product at a time so you can tell what actually improved your hair.
